Featuring: Dr. Roald Hoffmann, Nobel Laureate, Professor of Chemistry, Cornell University.
In this generously illustrated lecture several views of chemistry will be presented, stressing its psychological dimension and its tie to the arts: First of all, chemistry is, as it has always been, the art, craft, business of substances and their transformations. It is now also the science of microscopic molecules, both simple and complex. And then there are people's perceptions of chemistry - alternating between seeing the healing and the hurting aspects of this truly anthropic science. The underlying psychological tensions of this truly anthropic science will be explored.

Jill Metcoff and Diane Farris are photographers and friends who recently reconnected and discovered that their homes in Wisconsin and Florida have an unexpected and powerful connection - they dwell at the opposite ends of a sandhill crane migration route. The cranes have become an important presence in each of their lives and photographic work. The collaboration began in 2003 with photographic migrations, visiting and studying the connections between home and away for both the cranes and photographers.

The University of Illinois student chapter of the National Science Teachers Association and several Neuroscience Outreach Groups partner in educational outreach efforts in the SciSpace environment. Here a series of FAST (Fun Adventures in Science Teaching) activities linking physical activity and the human body are explored. These activities were developed to highlight links between different body systems and sports
For example, using glasses out-fitted with vision distorting prisms, you can experience how hand-eye coordination can be impacted and trained through practice.
Another activity uses a simple mirror tracing activity to show how the brain can adjust to align behaviors with sensory information. This shows how difficult it can be to complete simple tasks that people often take for granted when sensory information entering the brain is changed.
Visitors explore how exercise impacts a range of body variables through a number of stations. One station highlights how to measure change in heart rate and other body variables before and after exercise. By exploring these and other FAST activities, you can see how different body systems are connected and required for a range in sports. Through all of this, people can begin to appreciate the complexity of their actions. In doing so, they realize that maybe they shouldn't take simple physical actions for granted!
