9/20/2008 11AM | Ages: Adults
There are many things that make Chicago tops, but did you know our rooftops are one of them? Fact is: Chicago leads the nation in rooftop gardens, with more than 3 million square feet of green roof space and nearly 300 public and private buildings with green roofs either completed, under construction or planned. One of the most beautiful is the rooftop garden on top of City Hall. Conceived as a demonstration project to test the benefits of green roofs and their effect on temperature and air quality, the garden features 20,000 plants of more than 100 varieties, including trees, vines and shrubs. This green canopy absorbs less heat from the sun than a tar roof, keeping City Hall cooler in summer and requiring less energy for air conditioning. The garden is typically not open to the public, so donât miss this rare opportunity to enjoy it! This is a walking tourâ"please note: participants will need to climb steep stairs to get to the roof (30 minutes). Capacity: 10--Register early!

It's a Snail Eat Snail World: Mucus Trail Following in the Carnivorous Rosy Wolf Snail
9/24/2008 05PM-07PM | Ages: All Ages
Presented by: Elizabeth Davis-Berg, Science & Mathematics Department of Columbia College Chicago.
The rosy wolf snail, Euglandina rosea, is a carnivorous snail native to the Southeastern U.S. In the 1960s and 70s Euglandina was introduced to a number of Pacific oceanic islands to control the giant African land snail, a pest of agricultural crops. Rather than behaving as hoped, Euglandina rosea preyed upon the smaller native snails, decimating their numbers and contributing to the extinction of several species. This talk will discuss trail following in the rosy wolf snail and why this behavior contributes to its status on the ISSGâs 100 worst invasive species list.
ASL interpretation available upon request.

Great Conversations: The Beauty of Science Lecture Series
9/25/2008 05PM-07PM | Ages: Adults
The strangeness and beauty found at the cutting edge of contemporary science will provide the theme for our next two-year series of Great Conversations. Many of our most popular Great Conversationalists, from brain scientist Richard Davidson to cancer researcher Janet Rowley, have explored the frontiers of scientific investigation, and our new series of lectures promises to be just as fascinating. Our discussions will range from cosmological explorations of the beginnings of the universe to the work of environmental scientists concerned about the earth's future, and throughout we will be uniting rather than dividing the "two cultures" of the sciences and the humanities. On select Thursdays, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the Graham School will provide food, drink, and the best talk in town. We hope that you will join the conversation!

Film Premiere: Milking the Rhino
9/26/2008 08PM-09PM | Ages: All Ages
A ferocious kill on the Serengeti⦠warnings about endangered speciesâ¦These clichés of nature documentaries ignore a key landscape feature: villagers just off-camera, who navigate the dangers and costs of living with wildlife. The Maasai of Kenya and Namibiaâs Himbaâ"two of Earthâs oldest cattle culturesâ"are in the midst of upheaval. After a century of âwhite man conservation,â which displaced them and fueled resentment towards wildlife, they are vying to share the wildlife-tourism pie. This feature-length documentary by Kartemquin Films casts a new light on human-wildlife conflict and co-existence in an ever-shrinking world, including community-based conservation, which tries to balance the needs of wildlife and people. Touted by environmentalists, the reality is more complex. Charting the collision of ancient ways with Western expectations, Milking The Rhino tells intimate, hopeful and heartbreaking stories of people facing deep cultural change.

Lecture and Book Signing: "Henry Chandler Cowles, Pioneer Ecologist"
9/27/2008 01PM | Ages: 13 and up
Meet Victor Cassidy, author of a new book about Henry Chandler Cowles (1869 - 1939), an internationally-known ecologist, botanist, university teacher and conservationist. Cowles was the first to make sense of a poorly understood natural phenomenon called plant succession-the way that communities of plants come into a landscape, flourish, and create conditions for their replacement by other plant communities. Cowles was responsible for developing the ecology curriculum at the University of Chicago and his field work led him to become an active conservationist, testifying before Congress for protection of the Indiana Dunes-and working to create state parks in Illinois and nationwide. In his book, Cassidy uses previously unpublished photographs and journal entries to tell Cowles' story and to highlight his importance to the field of conservation science. A book signing will follow the lecture. Books will be available for purchase. This is a perfect opportunity for high school tudents (ages 14 - 18), teachers and adults to learn about a true "pioneer" scientist. Visit http://pge.uchicago.edu/ for more information.
