BSI: The Case of the Disappearing Bees
1/16/2009 8pm-10pm | Ages: 13 and up
The "pollinator crisis"-the widespread decline in the viability of animals that transport pollen and allow most of the planet's flowering plants to reproduce--may lack marquee appeal as a form of global change but it has real potential for profoundly altering the terrestrial world. Close to 100 crop plants in the U.S. rely on a single pollinator -the honey bee- to survive and reproduce. Over the past year, the mysterious disappearance of one-third of America's honey bees, due to what has become known as colony collapse disorder, has focused attention on how little is known about U.S. pollinators and how dependent we are upon them. May Berenbaum, Professor and Head of the Department of Entomology at the University of Illinois, will discuss the pollinator crisis, the plight of the honey bee, and advances in entomology that provide hope for the future of America's bees. In March of 2007 she testified to the House of Representatives about CCD, serving as the Chair on the Committee on the Status of Pollinators in North America.

In 1992, X-102 (Experimental 102), otherwise known as Underground Resistance - the Detroit-based electronic musical trio of Mike Banks, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood - set out to create a musical project about the planet Saturn and its rings in a full-length LP entitled X-102 discovers the Rings Of Saturn (Tresor). X-102 attempted to musically describe the physical make-up and content of the never-before seen planet and each of its significant rings known as A, B, C, E and F. Fifteen years later, Banks and Mills have produced a brand new musical soundtrack, featuring re-mastered original compositions paired with a visual version of the project and breathtaking images from the NASA Cassini/Huygen exploratory mission, which visited and documented Saturn and its moons. Musician and director Jeff Mills will discuss the project after the screening. The approximate running time is 1 hour and 15 minutes. This Ohm Multimedia Series program is supported by Axis Records and GammaPlayer.com.

Junior Science Cafe: Get the Mercury Out!
1/17/2009 1pm-2:30pm | Ages: 9 and up
We all use electricity in our daily lives, almost without thinking about it - turning on the lights, listening to the radio, using computers. However, more than half of the electricity generated in the United States comes from coal, and coal-fired power plants are one of the dirtiest sources of electricity. Coal-fired power plants are also the largest source of mercury pollution in the United States. Although mercury is useful in light bulbs, batteries, paint, and thermometers, mercury is poisonous and can contaminate the environment if it is not disposed of properly. We are exposed to mercury through the air we breathe, the food we eat, and it is absorbed in our skin. Mercury targets and kills neurons in specific areas of our brain. At this Junior Science Café, learn all about mercury, coal power plants, and how engineers are working to solve the problem of mercury pollution from coal-fired power plants.

Gateway Arch: A Reflection of America
1/20/2009 11:30am-12:30pm | Ages: All Ages
People said that it would fall and that a poorly funded project would leave the nation with a half finished monument. In the end, it would become an international symbol of the United States. It is an architectural and design masterpiece that has touched everyone who has touched it. From the individuals who worked tirelessly to champion funding, to the Steel Workers who dangled 630 feet in the air during construction, it is a triumph that will forever mark the lives of those involved with it. This film chronicles for the first time the complete story of this great American symbol, the largest stainless steel structure in history. More than just a dry historical record, this movie presents a message of optimism, the human capacity to pursue dreams and America's ability to achieve great things. The film is narrated by Kevin Kline. (60 minutes)

Pharaohs Menagerie: The Science and Art of Animals in Ancient Egypt
1/31/2009 10am-12pm | Ages: Adults
Zooarchaeology -- the study of animal remains from ancient sites-is one of the most valuable tools for understanding ancient societies. From animal bones, archaeologists can learn about ancient diets, enviornemental history, and the relationship between humans and the natural world.
Traditionally, archeologists have relied on the artistic record to learn about ancient animals and human-animal relationships. This class will introduce the animals of ancient Egypt using both science and art through a combination of laboratory activities, classroom lectures, slide shows and gallary visits.
Three sessions will take place in the Zooarchaeology Laboratory of the Oriental Institute, where participants will have the rare, behind-the-scenes opportunity to examine ancient specimens and discuss ways archaeologists interpret the animal bones found at ancient sites.
