In honor of Sam Insull's 150th birthday, author John Wasik (columnist for Bloomberg News) presents an updated discussion of his book The Merchant of Power: Sam Insull, Thomas Edison, and the Creation of the Modern Metropolis. Insull, the forgotten energy tycoon of the early twentieth century, began as Edison's private secretary and helped "light up" New York. After moving to Chicago and building a corporate empire, he lost everything in the Great Depression. Wasik notes that Insull was instrumental in a major fundamental shift in American history: his innovations in the delivery of electric power made possible the consumer age. Registration is required.

2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. In honor of Darwin's tremendous contributions to science, The Morton Arboretum will be hosting a new lecture series, Trees of Life, in which scientists will discuss Darwin's work in relation to their own work and the current state of evolutionary biology.
In our second installment in the Trees of Life lecture series, two well-regarded biologists from St. Louis University will explore Darwin's work on orchids. Dr. Peter Bernhardt, Professor of Biology and Dr. Retha Meier, Associate Professor of Education, have traveled all over the world studying the biology of orchids. They will discuss what drew Darwin to orchids after writing the Origin of Species, and show some spectacular examples of orchid pollination mechanisms from their own work. You'll also have the chance to have Peter sign his various popular botanical books, such as The Rose's Kiss or Gods and Goddesses in the Garden.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut and view our world from orbit? Would you like to sail from planet to planet and then blast millions of light years beyond our Milky Way galaxy? What would it be like to approach the farthest horizon of the observable Universe? Real-time computer modeling using scalable data sets now makes this possible. See how new software using NASA and cosmological data sets makes creating a virtual universe a reality. Experience how this software is revolutionizing both the digital planetarium world and giving us new perspectives on planet Earth.
About the presenter: Jim Sweitzer received his PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. Since that time, he has worked at several prominent planetariums, including the Adler in Chicago and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He has just completed work on a new digital planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and recently became one of the first members of the Climate Project, for which he was personally trained by former Vice President Al Gore. He currently teaches astronomy and energy policy at Columbia College, Chicago.

Saturday, March 14 (or 3.14) is "Pi Day"!
Illinois Science Council honors the famous mathematical constant with specials on PIES! On March 14, we encourage everyone to acknowledge the importance of pi in our lives with delicious pie specials offered at area bakeries. See our website at www.IllinoisScience.org for details on specials being offered at Bleeding Heart Organic Bakery and Café Selmarie in Chicago and Bennisons Bakery in Evanston.
Pi, if you've forgotten the geometry lesson, is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Pi is generally abbreviated to 3.14 but continues indefinitely. To date, it has been calculated by computer to over 1.2 trillion digits. Competitions exist for reciting the most digits by memory. As the world's most famous mathematical constant, Pi is important to many formulas used in mathematics, science, engineering and statistics.
(March 14 is also Albert Einstein's birthday - another great reason to celebrate!)

A ferocious kill on the Serengeti... dire warnings about endangered species... These clichés of nature documentaries ignore a key feature of the landscape: villagers just off-camera, who navigate the dangers and costs of living with wildlife on a daily basis. When seen at all, rural Africans are often depicted as the problem - they poach animals and encroach on habitat, they spoil our myth of wild Africa.
Milking the Rhino tells a more nuanced tale of human-wildlife coexistence in post-colonial Africa. The Maasai tribe of Kenya and Namibia's Himba - two of Earth's oldest cattle cultures - are in the midst of upheaval. Emerging from a century of "white man conservation," which turned their lands into game reserves and fueled resentment towards wildlife, Himba and Maasai communities are now vying for a piece of the wildlife-tourism pie.
Community-based conservation, which tries to balance the needs of wildlife and people, has been touted by environmentalists as "win-win." The reality is more complex. "We never used to benefit from these animals," a Maasai host of a community eco-lodge explains. "Now we milk them like cattle!" His neighbor disagrees: "A rhino means nothing to me! I can't kill it for meat like a cow." And when drought decimates the grass shared by livestock and wildlife, the community's commitment to conservation is sorely tested.
Charting the collision of ancient ways with Western expectations, Milking the Rhino tells intimate, hopeful and heartbreaking stories of people facing deep cultural change.

The Chicago Regional Chapter of ASM is sponsoring a hands-on introduction to engineering, ASM Materials Camp. We are looking for students entering their junior or senior year of high school this fall to enroll in our award winning program. This year's FREE camp will be held the week of June 22 - 27 and the host site is IIT where the students meet on Monday, Thursday & Saturday. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday they will be assigned to a team and a business or university that specializes in forensic science. During this time they will be given a project with the goal of figuring out why the component or system failed. On Saturday they will present their failure analysis to parents, other teams and ASM members. The cost to the student is nothing, all that we ask is that they provide their own transportation to IIT and the business they will be assigned to. For more information visit the Chicago Chapter Web Page (http://www.chicagoasm.org) to view a short video clip and apply online by March 15.

In 2000, a major archaeological discovery made in Niger by a team led by paleontologist Paul Sereno opened a window onto the "Green Sahara." The site revealed a 5,000-year-long drama of changing climate and transforming cultures. Lakeside cemeteries with of hundreds of spectacular human burials included a man seated in a turtle shell, a girl wearing an arm bracelet, and a triple burial involving a mother and two children in symbolic embrace. These peoples' tools, ornaments, diet, health, stature, genetic relationships, and appearance were reconstructed by an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists. This incredible discovery was first revealed to Chicago-area school children via the internet, and was the subject of a major National Geographic feature story and press announcement.
On March 23, 2009 travel back in time with world-renown paleontologist Dr. Paul Sereno to an ancient, human, world.
This program is presented in partnership with Project Exploration and is made possible by the Francis W. Parker School's 2008-09 Robert A. Pritzker Visiting Scientist·Inventor·Engineer in·Residence program.
The Robert A. Pritzker Visiting Scientist·Inventor·Engineer in Residence program was created by a gift to Parker in honor of engineer, industrialist and philanthropist Robert A. Pritzker '44. A dedicated member of the Parker community for many years, Pritzker is also the proud parent emeritus of James '68, Linda '71 and Karen '76.
