Oriental Institute Family Program: Dig it!

2/6/2010 1pm-3pm | Ages: 9 and up
Is Indiana Jones a typical archaeologist? Come and find out! Go behind-the-scenes to take part in a hands-on archaeological dig in our new Kipper Family Archaeology Discovery Center, where you'll meet Oriental Institute archaeologists and unearth amazing ancient-style artifacts. Then go on a scavenger hunt in the galleries to learn the secrets of some our most famous discoveries and see spectacular treasures brought to the Oriental Institute by James Henry Breasted, the Institute's founder, whose adventures rival Indy's own.

Fee includes the program, all materials, and an archaeology experiment to take home. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Suggested for children ages 8 and up, accompanied by an adult.

Building K-16 Bridges: Shaping the Future of Science/Math Learning

The University of Chicago hosts a special seminar with Jeanne Narum, founding director of Project Kaleidoscope, one of the leading advocates in the United States for what works in building and sustaining strong undergraduate programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

PKAL is an informal alliance taking responsibility for shaping undergraduate STEM learning environments that attract undergraduate students to STEM fields, inspiring them to persist and succeed by giving them personal experience with the joy of discovery and an awareness of the influence of science and technology in their world. Such efforts are a collective response to recent urgent calls to action that address their visions of a nation of learners and a nation of innovators.

Snowshoe Ramble

If there's enough snow, we'll strap on snowshoes and explore Spring Valley from a different perspective-off the trail. If there's no snow, we'll explore anyway! The hike will be followed with a story and hot chocolate. Activities are designed for families with children age 5-12. Fee is per family, so you only need to register one child of the appropriate age.

Reading the Winter Landscape

Winter isn't just cold, wet, and white! Explore winter's incredible variations and colors with staff from Brookfield Zoo and Spring Valley Nature Center. Learn what makes winter so important to the plants and animals living in Chicago Wilderness.

Become an expert on mammal adaptations. Use math and science skills to identify animal signs, tracks, and scat. Broaden your observation and descriptive skills while playing with ice and snow. Become familiar with Illinois winter related resources. Use literature to broaden your experience of seasonal change and take home a sled-full of ideas and activities. (Teachers receive 2 great books in this class!)
