U.S. high-school students perform less well in science and math than students in other economically advanced countries do. Dr. Samuel Silverstein, John C. Dalton Professor of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics in the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, created and continues to direct a nationally recognized Summer Work Experience for Professional Teachers (SWEPT) that utilizes the research laboratory experience at a major research university to provide experiences for New York City teachers that ultimately enhances their ability to teach science to their students. The results show that students of Columbiaâs SWEPT teachers pass the Regentsâ examinations at a significantly higher rate than students of other teachers in the same schools (Science 326:440-442).
Join C²ST as Professor Silverstein discusses how SWEPT programs can utilize existing scientific resources to improve teacher education and the quality of student science learning in Chicago and other cities.

Dr. Martin Chalfie
2008 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Columbia University
The Aequorea victoria Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) has become an almost ubiquitous research tool in biological research, being used in an ever-increasing variety of ways. I will review a bit of the history of GFP and show how this genetically-encoded marker, which can be visualized in living tissues and does not require additional cofactors, is currently being used. The development of GFP as a biological marker is a particularly good example of the importance of basic research on non-traditional organisms.
Born in Chicago, Martin Chalfie received both his A.B. (Biochemistry 1969) and Ph.D. (Physiology 1977) from Harvard University. He then did postdoctoral research with Dr. Sydney Brenner at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University since 1982. He is currently the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor and Chair. Chalfieâs primary research interest is in the genetic basis of neuronal differentiation and function. Most of his research has centered on understanding mechanical sensing, but it was his demonstration of the use of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) as a biological marker that led to his sharing the 2008 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Osamu Shimomura and Roger Y. Tsien. Among other honors Chalfie was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2003) and a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2005). In addition to his scientific research, Chalfie is editor-in-chief of the Caenorhabditis research communityâs on-line review WormBook.

Super Scientific Circus uses circus skills and magic tricks to explain scientific principles including friction, inertia, atoms, molecules, gravity, magnetism, and more. With boomerangs, bubbles, bullwhips, rolling globes, spinning plates and students floating in mid air, it is easy to see why this is one of our most popular shows.
