The American Veterinary Medical Association and its more than 78,000 members participate in a variety of activities to protect the health of humans, animals, and the environment. In addition to caring for the nation’s more than 70 million dogs, 80 million cats, 11 million pet birds, and millions of other animals – domestic and wild – veterinarians are active in medical research, the prevention of bio- and agro-terrorism, food safety, and public health. They also contribute greatly to emerging scientific breakthroughs throughout the world.
